What we do

Over the past 40 years, the APT has developed a unique global overview and expertise in all aspects of the prevention of torture. We support governments, justice systems, National Preventive Mechanisms (NPMs), national human rights institutions (NHRIs) and civil society to take effective actions to prevent torture and other ill-treatment.

Our mission

Mobilise: Through its constructive approach, the APT mobilises States and civil society in favour of prevention through the following actions:

  • Inspiring innovative solutions to prevent ill-treatment;
  • Informing that the risk exists everywhere, and that prevention works;
  • Persuading that it is necessary to commit to prevention.

Accompany: The APT accompanies its partners on the ground by carrying out the following actions:

  • Co-developing strategies adapted to the realities of each country;
  • Advising and offering technical and legal expertise tailored to your needs;
  • Equipping and training thanks to its know-how and reference guides.

Protect: The APT helps protect the rights of all persons deprived of their liberty by:

  • Making visible the protection needs of all people locked up , in particular those in a situation of vulnerability;
  • Bringing together all stakeholders around the table to facilitate dialogue and the search for solutions;
  • Improving the law and detention practices.
