Our priority is to support the effectiveness of NPMs throughout the region. We facilitate peer exchanges and assist with strategic reviews. We provide trainings, advice and other capacity-strengthening activities. Finally, we also advocate for broader prevention strategies with States, detention authorities, and local and regional institutions.
The APT has a long-standing involvement in the region. In Europe, APT played a pivotal role in the development of the first regional torture prevention treaty. The European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and its monitoring mechanism, the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment (CPT). The CPT carries out unannounced visits to all places of deprivation of liberty throughout the Council of Europe region.
Examples of our work in the Europe and Central Asia region:
Regional: Our advocacy and joint work with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe
Regional: Our work on monitoring immigration detention with the Council of Europe
Georgia: Strengthening the capacity of the NPM to strategically follow-up on its recommendations
