Accompany our partners

The APT accompanies its partners on the ground by carrying out the following actions:

1. Co-develop

Jointly with our partners on the ground, we develop strategies adapted to the realities of each country.

For instance, we work together with the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) to increase the torture prevention capacity of African National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs):

We launch, with the Asia Pacific Forum (APF), an innovative project to strenthen the capacity of Asia-Pacific NHRIs to prevent torture and other ill-treatment:

2. Advise

We advise our partners on the ground and offer them technical and legal expertise tailored to their needs.

For instance, we draft a practical guide destined to assist lawmakers in drafting specific anti-torture legislation or in revising existing domestic laws:

3. Equip

We equip and train our partners on the ground thanks to our know-how and reference guides.

For instance, we publish a reference guide on detention monitoring, which was translated in 16 languages and is used daily by all those who visit places of detention around the world:

We develop a comprehensive database for prison monitors on detention topics and human rights standards, paying specific attention to situations of vulnerability:

We organise, or co-organise with partners, Summer Schools for National Preventive Mechanisms (NPMs) to strengthen their knowledge of recent legal developments and increase their monitoring capacity:

The 2016 Summer School welcomed 17 participants from 14 different countries, together with torture prevention experts from the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT), civil society organisations, the APT, the police and the French NPM (CGLPL).
